12U Boys County Cup Report

Date

This year’s 12U Boys County Cup was held over the weekend of 13th and 14th September and we were in Play-Off Group 1A at East Dorset Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

The Team was:                Arthur Hollingdale, Monty Gaynor, Jude Jeffries Keel, Reggie Scutt

Team Captains:               David Gaterell and Macca Neaves

Other Counties:              Avon, Cambridgeshire, Dorset, Essex and South Wales

The six counties were split into two boxes and we were with Cambridgeshire and Avon.

Day 1 v Cambridgeshire

The boys got off to a challenging start and Monty and Reggie both lost in very close match tie-breaks 8-10 and 11-13.  Jude won his singles so it was 1-3 going into the doubles.

After playing the singles v Avon, it was back on court for the doubles.  Arthur and Reggie teamed up as second pair and won whilst Jude and Monty fought bravely but lost yet another tie-break 8-10.  So 2-4 result.

2nd March v Avon (singles)

As rain and gale force winds were forecast for the Sunday, it was decided to play the Avon singles straight after the singles v Cambridgeshire.  We had wins for Monty, Arthur and Reggie and Jude lost a very close match 8-10 in the match tie-break.  So 2-2 going into the doubles.

Day 2 v Avon (doubles)

It was an early start as rain / wind was forecast for the afternoon.  We kept with the same pairs as day 1, Arthur and Reggie and Jude and Monty and both won comfortably, so a 4-2 win v Avon.

This result put us second in our box, playing for 3rd / 4th play-off v Essex.

Day 2 v Essex

The boys flew through their singles with convincing wins and only dropped seven games between them.  In the doubles we paired Jude and Arthur and they only dropped one game and Monty and Reggie won another tie-break 10-6.  6-0 win!

So the boys finished 3rd overall having narrowly lost to Cambridgeshire, who ended up winning and qualifying for the Final on a match shoot-out v South Wales.

A good weekend all in, with great support from all the parents.

David Gaterell – Team Captain
