Become a part-time coach to support you whilst at university, as part of a portfolio career, or if you looking for a new opportunity having stopped working
Tennis coaching is an incredibly rewarding job with flexible hours and the ability to work at times that suit you. All across Hampshire & IOW, tennis clubs and coaching programme providers are actively looking for coaches who are available to work part-time hours (e.g. 6 to 8 hours per week).
• A university student, who is keen to earn whilst studying, as well as develop transferrable skills
• A parent looking to return to work on a part-time basis
• An early retiree, e.g. school teacher, looking for a fulfilling role to use their skills and earn some extra income
• Someone looking to develop a portfolio career, working in a variety of environments
Please note that part-time coaching roles are likely to be self-employed.
This will all depend on the qualification that you achieve, however, some examples might be as follows:
• Assisting a lead coach with group sessions for younger players
• Running small groups alongside a lead coach
• Teaching basic technique
• Visiting local schools
• Offering individual coaching
• Performing administrative and support tasks
There is a national coaching pathway, managed by the LTA, with opportunities available locally for all levels of coach. The qualification that you obtain will depend on the kind of coaching you wish to deliver, e.g. assisting, leading, groups, private lessons, etc. A simple overview is as follows:
A two-day course after which you will be fully trained to assist a lead coach with coaching groups.
Perfect for assisting with Saturday morning 8 and under sessions!
This five day qualification (split into four core training days and one elective day), enables you to lead in the delivery of group coaching.
Ideal for helping on an existing programme, allowing you to deliver sessions independently.
An 11-day qualification, comprised of nine days’ Core Training and two electives (from a choice of three), allowing you to lead both group and individual coaching sessions.
Suited to someone looking to further their professional knowledge and work independently within a coaching team.
Please note that each qualification also includes minimum requirements, such as a DBS check, first aid training and welfare / safeguarding training.
Full details about the qualifications pathway are available as follows: https://www.lta.org.uk/roles-and-venues/coaches/qualifications/.
We are also delighted to say that Hampshire & IOW Tennis has a qualifications bursary scheme, which is designed to help coaches through the qualification pathway.
Of course, this will depend on the programme, however, sample rates are as follows:
• Level 1 – £15 per hour
• Level 2 – £20 per hour
• Level 3 – £25 per hour
Hampshire & IOW Tennis would be delighted to advise you further on the possibility of a part-time coaching career and can connect you with any progammes locally that currently have vacancies.
We may also be able to assign you a mentor to support you in your journey to part-time coaching.
